Elegant Swan Lake Platter (Printable Version)

An artistic platter with swans crafted from cheese or apples, framed by blue grapes and pale crackers.

# List of Ingredients:

→ Swans

01 - 7 oz white cheese (mozzarella, Havarti, or firm goat cheese) or 2 crisp white-fleshed apples

→ Lake Surroundings

02 - 9 oz blue grapes, washed and stems removed
03 - 3.5 oz pale crackers (rice crackers, water crackers, or gluten-free crackers)

→ Garnishes (optional)

04 - Fresh mint leaves
05 - Edible flowers (pansies or violets)

# How to Make It:

01 - If using cheese: Slice cheese into 0.4-inch thick pieces. Carve two symmetrical swan shapes using a small sharp knife, shaping necks and heads from smaller pieces and secure with toothpicks as needed. If using apples: Halve each apple vertically, carve swan bodies and necks with a paring knife, and brush with lemon juice to prevent browning.
02 - Position the two swans facing each other at the center of a large platter or wooden board.
03 - Arrange the blue grapes in a curved, flowing design surrounding the swans to simulate water.
04 - Fan pale crackers around the grapes to complete the lakeshore effect.
05 - Optionally, place fresh mint leaves and edible flowers along the edges for added color and sophistication.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It transforms basic cheese and grapes into a showstopping centerpiece that tastes as good as it looks
  • No cooking required means you can create this while managing a hundred other party tasks
  • Your guests will think you spent hours in the kitchen when it really takes just twenty-five minutes
02 -
  • If using apples, brush every cut surface immediately with lemon juice or they'll brown faster than you can blink; I learned this the hard way when my beautiful apple swans turned bronze mid-party
  • Cheese carving improves dramatically with a sharp knife and patience; a dull knife creates ragged edges and is actually harder to control than a razor-sharp one
  • The board is best assembled no more than two hours before serving to keep the cheese fresh and the apples from oxidizing
03 -
  • A slightly warmed knife dipped in water between carving strokes will give you cleaner, more elegant lines in the cheese
  • If your cheese swans feel wobbly, don't worry; a small, subtle toothpick hidden underneath provides invisible support that no one will notice but you'll be grateful for
